When I woke up yesterday and checked a couple of my WP sites, I noticed Matt Mullenweg and the WP development team have released Wordpress Version 2.6 already! Kudos to the team for getting 2.5 (and now 2.6) out so quickly and packed with new features.
We won’t bother rehashing the new features in detail as many other sites have already done, but there are some great new enhancements that further extend the lead Wordpress already has as the premier blogging and content management system (CMS) platform available today!
It seems that the most recent releases have introduced functions you once needed plugins to accomplish; the latest is the ability to add captions to images. While the Easy Image Caption plugin has provided this ability in the past, it appears it will no longer be needed, although we will review the differences between the two options for you in a future post.
Same goes for the theme preview feature; we have used Theme Switcher Reloaded until now but this is a great feature to have built into WP 2.6!
One of the headaches I face is upgrading 50-plus Wordpress sites and any of you who use a lot of plugins know that the old 5 minute install can take a lot more time and involve unforeseen complications because of plugin incompatibilities, custom WP Theme features, etc.
So, we decided to start by upgrading the Wordpress WOW installation from WP 2.3.2 to WP 2.6 this morning to see if we encountered any problems or incompatibilities. Happily, everything went smoothly as advertised in Matt’s post and video!
After upgrading, we decided to give a few of the latest and greatest new features a try.

For the life of me, I cannot get captions to work. It looks great in preview, but live, all the code spills out around the photo and there’s no caption at all. I added the caption code to my theme’s style.css but there was no change. Seems like I’m just one minor step away from making this work. If anyone has any ideas, I’d love to hear them. I’ll add a caption to my first post to demonstrate.
